Region of Orava

The Orava region is one of the northernmost regions of Slovakia. It has an area of 1661 km2 and includes the districts of Dolný Kubín, Námestovo and Tvrdošín. Every visitor will enjoy this picturesque region. This region is abundant in historical monuments, hiking trails and natural treasures. The first written document that mentions the Orava region is from 1265. This document regulated the responsibilities and privileges of the subjects of king Bela IV. in Liptov. The territory of Orava is almost identical with the Slovak part of the former Árva County. The region has two parts: Lower Orava - its historical center is Dolný Kubín, and Upper Orava centered in Námestovo and Tvrdošín.
