Castle Topoľčianky

The village of Tozamok1 190x121 Castle Topoľčiankypoľčianky lies in the valley of the Žitava River, surrounded by the Tríbeč Mountain Range in the northwest and the Pohronský Inovec in the east, 36 km from Nitra. A monumental Classicistic chateau scenically fits into a large English park situated at the northern end of the village. However, this is only the south wing of the entire historical object63 190x121 Castle Topoľčianky, incorporated into the three Renaissance wings of the older castle. The Classicistic wing became a museum of historical furniture and home accessories – paintings, clocks, ceramics,carpets, embroidered oriental curtains and weapons. A visitor gradually passes through the parlours with Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Classicist furniture. There is one of the largest collections of ceramics in Slovakia, especially porcelain and the chateau´s library, one of the few completely preserved castle libraries in Slovakia, founded b71 190x121 Castle Topoľčiankyy Count Ján Keglevich. Part of the castle is the Castle Chapel, built in the northwestern bastion in 1662.The chapel contains a remarkable picture of its founder Elizabeth Rákoczy. Since 1986, the chapel has been an important pilgrimage site. The last aristocratic owners of the chateau, Archduke Josef August Habsburg with his wife Archduchess Augusta, a granddaughter of Emperor Franz Joseph I, abandoned the castle in October 1918.
